Post-Doc in Protein NMR at ZoBio, NL

Post-Doctoral position in NMR-Based Drug Discovery available at ZoBio


As part of a collaborative computational NMR project involving ZoBio (www.zobio.com) and the lab of Professors Güntert and Riek at the ETH in Zürich, a 3 year post-Doctoral position is available with a possibility to start as of January 2016. The aim of this project is to significantly speed up the process of structure based drug discovery (SBDD) using NMR. The rate-limiting step is the assignment of the resonances in NMR spectra of proteins. We want to fully automate this process using all available information. We will deliver fully tested and optimized software capable of using a priori knowledge of a 3D protein structure and as small a number of NMR experiments as possible to determine the structure of a small molecule-target complex to SBDD. In this project, Prof. Güntert will adapt his FLYA algorithm to address issues specifically related to automating the (re)assignment of protein spectra upon small molecule ligand addition and calculation of the 3D structure of the complex. ZoBio will be responsible for providing real NMR data from protein-ligand complexes, implementing the adapted FLYA algorithm and testing its performance. ZoBio has ready access to cryoprobe equipped Bruker 600 and 850 MHz spectrometers to support the work.

We are looking for a candidate with a Ph.D. in NMR. You should be highly conversant with modern NMR methods and have the following:

• Implement and optimize pulse sequences for biomolecular assignment, structure determination and interactions.

• Think strategically about optimal data acquisition to answer questions about biomolecular structure and interactions.

• Experience with sample preparation for NMR experiments.

• Analyze multi-dimensional NMR spectra and interest in the automation of spectral analysis, write scripts in (preferably) Python to analyze data, automate workflows etc.

The explicit goal of this project will be to publish in peer reviewed journals. It is expected that the post-Doc will participate significantly in other (commercial) projects within ZoBio as well. For this later responsibility you should be a team player and be interested in intellectual “sparring” for problem solving. The person who fills this position will be an employee of ZoBio. Salary will be commensurate with years of post-Doctoral experience.
